A proximity card; a contactless card read without insertion into a card reader. They do not require a swipe, they can also be left in a wallet or in a purse and continue to function. Proximity cards resemble standard 30 mil PVC cards. They contain an embedded metallic antenna coil that holds the encoded data.

Proximity cards communicate with door access readers via a low-frequency radio frequency of 125 kHz. When placed on the reader, the card’s unique strand of numbers passes to the access control panel. It then verifies if the number matches an approved number in the internal database.
